Craftsman in the SGV.

American architectural style that flourished roughly 1900–1930 in reaction to Victorian ornament and industrial mass production. Southern California Craftsman bungalows define the SGV's earliest residential character, with the largest intact concentration in Pasadena's Bungalow Heaven Landmark District.

Identifying Craftsman.

• Low-pitched roof with deep overhangs and exposed rafter tails
• Wide front porch with tapered columns on brick or stone piers
• Built-in cabinetry, bookcases, and dining-room hutches
• Quarter-sawn oak or fir trim, plate rails, picture rails
• Original Arts & Crafts tile (often Batchelder) fireplace surrounds
• Diamond-pane leaded art glass in cabinet doors and side windows

Notable Craftsman Architects in the SGV.

• Greene & Greene — Charles and Henry Greene operated their architectural practice in Pasadena from 1894 to 1916, producing the masterworks of American Arts & Crafts residential architecture — the so-called 'ultimate bungalows.' The Gamble House remains their best-preserved example and is operated as a museum.
• Sylvanus Marston — Pasadena architect credited with creating the bungalow-court typology in the early 1900s. His practice (later Marston, Van Pelt & Maybury) produced an enormous volume of SGV residential and institutional work spanning multiple style periods.
